I had a 7 hour layover in Bangkok on the way to Chennai, India, so we all went shopping in Bangkok. There was a movie theatre in the area, so I ditched my group and watched “Iron Man”. It was in English, with Thai subtitles. Even though I’ve only been in Thailand for a week, I was amazed how good it felt to watch something very American. How much more American can you get than a super hero movie? I think I was the only native English speaker in the theatre, because I was laughing at all the jokes when everyone else was silent. Either the jokes didn’t quite translate, or Thai people don’t have a sense of humor. I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt.
And, apparently they play the Thai national anthem before every movie. As a very Thai sounding song was played, I noticed that everyone in the audience was standing. Maybe seeing a movie in Thailand is like going to a baseball game in America?
By the way, “Iron Man” is a great movie. I think I would’ve loved it even if I weren’t yearning for something to remind me of home.
